Okolona City Council hears update on remodelingBy John NelsonPublished Wednesday, May 10, 2006 in the Gurdon Times Horses and a resignation became the main topics of discussion during a meeting of the Okolona City Council. Okolona Mayor James Paul and the Council members accepted the resignation of Okolona Clerk and Treasurer Vickie L. Davis. "We are looking for someone from here to fill this elected position until Dec. 31," he said. "We encourage anyone interested to call town hall or me." City council members in attendance for the May meeting were fire chief John Hornsby, Sue Muldrew, Hazy Barton, Jean Johnson and Brenda Pigee. Virginia McClure asked that two horses be allowed to graze at the old community church site, with the stipulation that the animals do not spend the night. The request was unanimously denied. In addition, Clark County Justice of the Peace Francis McGill updated the council on improvements made on the Okolona Community Center. "We hired Royal Siding Company of Hot Springs to do our building and paid for it through our spaghetti benefit and other funds," she said. "The siding cost was nearly $8,000 but it sure is improved. We had $5,000 from our spaghetti supper to put with the $3,000 given to us by the Horace Cabe Foundation. That paid for the siding." McGill said fixing the ceiling inside the center is in process and installing heaters bought with funds earmarked for the center is also on the agenda. Paul said, "All said and done, after we do the final improvements and everything, I believe we will have nearly $5,000 left for another project. "I would like to see that our town hall really needs help." McGill said the town received an $800 grant for heaters at the community center, which have been ordered from Kuhns Hardware at Gurdon. Other projects, in addition to the ongoing ceiling tile effort, include light fixtures and insulation in the ceiling. McGill said, "We have done well with this project." Paul suggested the Okolona Town Hall be fixed up as a town museum, and that books from the library could be housed there. McGill said the community center project still needs cabinets. Following the meeting, the council heard from Clark County Assessor Kasy Summerville regarding personal property assessments. Paul said the city council will meet again at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, with a presentation by Clark County Clerk Rhonda Cole. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
