A man and a woman from West Virginia were coming from the direction of Prescott and trying to get a few more miles toward their home state Wednesday when they were stopped by Gurdon Patrolman Chris Russell.

Russell, upon discovering the man was having trouble walking because of an injured leg, and noting that the couple looked tired, decided to contact Gods Hands, a homeless shelter established since the middle 1990s.

Tommy Potter, Faith Mission and Celebrate Recovery supervisor, gave Russell Margie Montgomerys telephone number at the Arkadelphia based homeless shelter. He also called Allens Barbecue, a Christian based restaurant in Gurdon, and arranged for the couple to have a meal.

The police ran a background check on the couple and discovered they were non-violent and simply in need of help.

They were transported to Gods Hands for the night, with the aim of possibly getting bus tickets home, if shelter finances permitted.

Officer Russell said, "We wanted to help them all we could. They were obviously a very tired couple whose finances to get home had depleted."

Potter said, "Helping them is just part of what we at the mission do for people. I realize this action may bring a group to us with hands out. We may not be able to help everyone, but those who meet our standards, and even those with bad legal paper, will get some sort of helping hand from us. We will do for others what we can do."
