Writer notes beautiful day on pondBy John NelsonPublished Wednesday, April 26, 2006 in the Gurdon Times The "rooster fight" was not a fight. Most of the audience seemed relatively uninterested in commenting on animals in town. Some did complain about too many unsupervised cats. One fellow said he thought excessive crowing from roosters was about as bad as too much barking from dogs. By the way, I apologize for implying a loud rooster is of no concern to me. Actually, it is especially an issue if one of the feathered critters should happen to go wild. I had this happen to me when I lived on Front Street last year. Perhaps a legal provision is merited. One other guy said he would start keeping his cows mostly out in the country further in order to keep bad smells down to a minimum near town. As to the mayor, Clayton Franklin seemingly came to supervise a good fight and nobody cared to join in. The ordinance to be presented to the Gurdon City Council in May will probably outlaw hogs in town, pit bulls and maybe restrict excessive noise or cruelty connected with raising other animals. I doubt if it does much more than these things, and perhaps, in Gurdon, it should not. Fishing thoughts I made it fishing this Sunday morning and watched the Easter sunrise come up over Gurdon Pond. It was beautiful! Thank you Lord for such beauty. As to my catch, I pulled out a brim and a 3-pound catfish. That was fun. If I could catch a few of them, I would have a serious mess of eating fish. Perhaps one of these days I will take fishing serious and do so. I thought many thoughts on the pond. But mostly I thought about our downtown. I would like to see more and more business down there. Ravens is a good start, but only a start. We need a motorcycle shop, a downtown fish restaurant and more. Now that is just what I think. You have to decide what is best. I am just a young transplant to our community. What sort of shops would you like to see downtown? Surely a movie would be nice. I would love to see someone open a Hoo Hoo Theater 2006. Some say those who push too hard for industrialization are ruining the bedroom community we have. I dont believe that necessarily has to happen. We can reach an economic happy medium, where our kids and grand kids can find work locally. It really depends on the intention and direction of the builders of Gurdon 2006. Until next time, this is John, still on his Journey. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
