Council adopts new city mottoBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, April 26, 2006 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott has a new motto and that statement will be emblazoned on the citys water tower. The net motto is the result of efforts by several area groups and residents and the final selection was made by the Prescott City Council during their March board meeting. Area residents submitted ideas for the motto over the past few weeks. Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Director Mary Godwin presented the board with the three top picks from the chamber board. Godwin told the council that she would also let them see the other options that the board had not chosen, but the council members opted to choose from the list submitted by the Chamber. Prescott - A Stop Along the Way, was submitted by Prescott High School student Chris Phillips. Godwin said that was the chambers first selection and it ended up being the one favored by a majority of the council. After three months, we have a decision, Godwin said. Other options presented to the council were Prescott, Americas Hometown and Prescott, Pride of the Piney Woods. The motto will replace, Prescott, City of Progress. Godwin told the council that the chamber is also searching for those willing to work on the Beautification Committee. She said there have been some young people assigned to work on specific tasks as part of their community services. The council also heard reports from the Prescott Police Departments and the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office. Prescott Police Chief Brian Russell said the city has made 41 DWI arrests this year. Russell also said that there have been a reduction in complaints about loud music from cars on Rosston Road. City Councilman Jerry Wilson asked Russell about requirements for speed limit signs if city officers are using radar guns. Russell said the city doesnt have to post signs as long as theres a city ordinance defining speed limits. On the subject of budgets, Councilman Billy House questioned the citys electric department. He said that at the current rate of expenditure, that department will be some $18,000 over budget by the end of the year. House said hes basing that on the average expenditures for that department over the first three months of this year. While there was no answer forthcoming regarding the apparent difference in the budgeted amount and the expenditures, House was promised an answer by the next council meeting. The council meets at 7 p.m. the third Monday of each month in the board room at Prescott City Hall. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
