There will be several political races of particular interest to residents of Prescott and Nevada County. Positions up for election that have multiple candidates include the county judge, county sheriff, circuit clerk and several Justice of the Peace and City Alderman spots.

The filing deadline for candidates running for most offices was at noon on April 4. According to information from the Nevada County Clerks office, Baker Butler and William Mullins have each filed their intent to seek the county judges position. The current county judge, James Roy Brown, isnt looking for reelection this term. According to Brown, he isnt retiring, but is simply not asking for a job right now.

The Nevada County Sheriffs office has three candidates vying for that spot. Steve Otwell is the incumbent but hes facing Harold Vines and Bobby Carlton. Both Vines and Carlton have law enforcement experience. Vines served one term as sheriff in 1995.

There are two candidates vying for the position of Nevada County Circuit Clerk. Carolyn Steed, current circuit clerk, is not seeking re-election. Rita Reyenga and Judy Duke have each filed their candidacy intentions.

Four of the countys nine justice of the peace seats are contested races this year. In District 1, Vicki Susie Key is completing her first term as JP. Key is being challenged for that seat by Robert D. Loe.

District 6 will also see a race for the JP spot. Herbert Coleman and William David Barham have each filed their candidacy for the seat. That seat was vacated by the death of Leo Holloman. His wife, Carolyn Holloman, is currently serving as JP for District 6 but did not file as a candidate for the position.

District 8's incumbent is Arval Mason who will face E.Z. Sonny Buster for the opportunity to serve the residents of the county as JP for that district.

The final race for a seat on the quorum court is in District 9. George Clary is the incumbent for that seat, but Michael Otwell has also filed candidacy for the District 9 position.

Elsewhere in the county, the Missouri Township Constable position - currently a vacant position - has three candidates. Gervis Fore, Todd Prewitt and Frank Beaty have all three filed for the spot.

The City of Prescott has only one contested race, and that one is for a seat that will be vacated by the current city alderman. Ann Stockton has indicated that she wont seek another term. Two candidates are vying for her seat. Julian Beasley and Elaine Williams are each looking for the opportunity to hold the Ward 3, Position 1 city aldermans position.

On the state level, there are several major contested races, including both the governor and lieutenant governors positions.
