Nevada junior teams win district tilt

Nevadas junior girls basketball team, led by first year coach Stacy Stockton, breezed through the district tournament to capture the title.

The tourney was held at Genoa Central. The Junior Lady Jays opened play against Gurdons Junior Lady Go-Devils and posted an impressive 26-8 win.

Nevada pretty much ended the game with 13 points in the first period, adding three in the second and third, finishing scoring with seven in the final six minutes of play.

Anitea Williams led Nevada with six points. Allie Brown and Aletha Gilbert scored five each.

Gurdons top scorers had two points apiece.

Nevada was four of 10 at the line, while Gurdon was two of four.

Nevada 26

Fouke 20

Nevadas second game in the tourney was tougher as the Lady Panthers fought hard, but fell 26-20 to the determined Lady Jays.

Fouke outscored Nevada 6-3 in the first period, but ended up trailing 13-10 at the half. Nevada pushed its lead to 20-14 at the end of three and held on for the win.

Gilbert was a scoring machine for the Lady Jays with 12.

H. McCarty led Fouke with six points.

The Lady Jays were nearly perfect from the charity stripe, connecting on nine of 12 free throws. Fouke hit one of three free throws.

Nevada 36

Genoa 23

This set up the finals between mentor and student. Cecily Butler coached Stockton during Stocktons high school career at Prescott.

In this instance, student proved to be the master as the Lady Jays posted a 36-23 win to take the title.

Nevada jumped out to a 9-4 lead at the end of one, and was up 19-9 at the half. The Lady Jays slowed down somewhat in the third, scoring only four points, but led 23-15 heading into the final six minutes, where Nevada outscored Genoa 13-5.

Hannah Hampton stepped up to lead the Lady Jays with 12 points.

Cherie Green led Genoa with seven.

The Lady Jays again had a good night at the line, netting eight of 13 free throws. Genoa shot 16 free throws, connecting on six.
