Holleman replaces husband as JP on Quorum CourtBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 22, 2006 in the Nevada County Picayune Carolyn Holleman will replace her husband on the Nevada County Quorum Court. At the Courts February meeting, Nevada County Judge James Roy Brown informed the panel he had received notice a letter would be coming from the governors office concerning the vacancy left when Holleman died. However, he said, he was not told what was in the letter. When the letter arrived, it contained the name of Hollemans replacement. The Nevada County Sheriffs Office will be getting a new vehicle, a 2006 Dodge Durango. However, this vehicle will not be for day-to-day use by the NCSO as a patrol car. Instead, it must be used as a command center during emergency situations. Brown said the command vehicle will be equipped with the AWIN radio system, along with a county radio system. The Court was informed this vehicle must be used in this capacity for a minimum of three years, after which it can be put into regular usage. Money for the vehicle came from the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM). Nevada and Lafayette counties were the only two in the state to get vehicles with ADEM funds, Brown said. Money from Homeland Security, he said, will be used to get new doors in the courthouse along with metal detectors for them. This is to increase security within the courthouse. Back on the topic of vehicles for the NCSO, Bob Cummins said cars could be bought from the Arkansas State Police. They would be high mileage, he added, but could be purchased fairly cheaply. Brown agreed saying other city police departments and sheriffs offices buy these vehicles. He will look into this, with the Court scheduled to discuss it again at its March meeting. Donnie Crain, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office, updated the Court on the happenings at the EDO. He began saying the Leadership Nevada County program was kicked off in January with the annual retreat, and went well. This month the class traveled to Little Rock for the segment on state government. Crain said he is working on grants for a youth center, adding its a need for the entire county, not just Prescott, especially for after school and during the summer months. Rosston, he said, wants a walking trail built around its city hall. He is working on a grant for this project as well. In addition, Crain is trying to obtain a defibrilator for area volunteer fire departments. He is going through the Nevada County Health Unit (NCHU) for this. Should he be successful, firemen will have to be trained how to use it. Talking about walking trails, Crain said ground was broken for the walking/jogging trail in Prescott by the NCHU. Culverts have been installed in the low area, and the track should be completed by mid April, weather permitting. The track will be lighted and have benches. Crain told the court there has been interest by prospects in possibly locating retail and commercial businesses in Prescott and the county. These prospects will be sent information packets about the region. Trade Days, he said, has been operating on a limited basis the last few months. However, organizers of Trade Days are wanting to kick it up in April by doing marketing and trying to get outside vendors to come to Prescott. Trade Days is held once a month on the second Saturday.
