Nominations are sought; scholarship aps readyBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 8, 2006 in the Nevada County Picayune Nominations are being sought for Citizen of the Year for the annual Chamber Banquet. Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, said the banquet will be held in March this year, but no firm date has been set. The theme will be Stepping out in the 70s. Patrons are encouraged to come dressed in 70s attire. Any county resident can submit a letter of nomination for Citizen of the Year. The nominee must also be a county resident. The reason for nomination must be in writing. All nominations will be judged based on the nominees outstanding service in the following areas: to family, to the city, to the county, to the state, national affairs, church related activities, fraternal organizations, recreational activities and industrial and education oriented services. The selection committee will judge the content of the letters, not the number of letters submitted for an individual. The deadline to submit a nomination for Citizen of the Year is Feb. 17. Godwin said applications are being taken for the annual Chamber Scholarship at this time. Each year the Chamber gives two scholarships, valued at $250 each, to a pair of students from schools in Nevada County. The students must be seniors at either Prescott High School, Nevada High School or Emmet High School with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 to be considered. However, she said, preference will be given to those with GPAs 3.0 or higher. In addition, the students must plan on attending a two or four year college or technical school to be considered. They must submit two letters of recommendation with one being from a school counselor or teacher. The other letter should be from someone in their community or church. The applicants must also submit a paragraph on their planned career goals. The deadline for applying for a Chamber scholarship is Feb. 28. Applications can be picked up from school counselors or at the Chamber. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
