Lady Bears spoil homecomingBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 1, 2006 in the Nevada County Picayune Homecoming for the Nevada Lady Jays was spoiled Friday, Jan. 27, by the Lady Bears of Springhill. Prior to the game Nevada Coach Stacy Stockton removed two players from the Lady Jay team because of team infractions, leaving the already short bench even shorter. Still, the Nevada senior girls gave it everything they had for 32 minutes but fell 47-31 to the Lady Bears. The game began with Springhill getting the tip and the first points of the game. The Lady Bears pressed the smaller Nevada team, making it tough for the Lady Jays to get in position for shots, or get shots off. Additionally, the Lady Bears were deadly from the field, hitting almost everything they put up. By the end of one Springhill was in control 17-4. Nevadas first bucket came at the 2:59 mark of the period. The second quarter was a replay of the first as the Lady Bears pretty much had their way. Springhill showed plenty of patience, working the ball for the best shot, while the Lady Jays had problems getting a shot. Halftime arrived with Springhill leading 31-8. Though Nevada got the ball to start the third quarter, Springhill opened scoring with a three-pointer. However, Springhills coach began substituting heavily, getting all of his players valuable minutes of playing time. Nevadas Lady Jays also began finding the range and scoring more in the third period. The frame came to an end with the Lady Bears up 42-24. The final eight minutes began with Nevada in the bonus. The Lady Jays showed heart and guts by trying to fight back. The best they could do, though, was play Springhill evenly. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
