Prescotts senior teams split with Ashdown Tuesday, Jan. 24, with the senior boys posting a 70-62 win, while the Wolverettes lost a close one, 33-32.

WOLVES 70

PANTHERS 62

From start to finish this was a game of speed, as both teams pushed the ball up and down the hardwood, firing the rock from all points on the floor, with Prescott posting a 70-62 win in the end.

There was little scoring early on as neither team shot well for the first five minutes of the game, The Panthers held a 6-2 lead with 3:09 showing in the opening quarter, only to be outscored 10-5 as the Wolves found their range and began taking control.

Period two was a repeat of the first eight minutes as the two teams continued playing at a blistering pace. The difference, though, is both scored more in the second quarter.

With 2:27 left in the half, Prescott led 25-22 and was in the bonus situation. At this point, Jacob Brown went on a tear, hitting a pair of threes and driving in for a layup to put the Wolves up 33-24.

The halftime score was 33-26, Prescott, with the Panthers scoring the last two points on a slam at the buzzer.

Period three saw the Wolves start to pull away from Ashdown, building a double-digit lead, but seeing the Panthers fight back and cut the margin.

The Wolves played smart and as a team. This helped keep Ashdown off balance. The third quarter came to an end with Prescott leading 49-40.

The final eight minutes was a track meet as both squads raced up and down the court.

Prescott built a 54-40 lead, only to see the Panthers battle back, cutting the lead to 54-46 with 3:02 remaining. Points were precious and precarious in the paint as all 10 players fought for the rock and points.

The Panthers trailed 60-54 with 1:41 left in the game. At this point, the Ashdown coach began using fouls to stop the clock and try to stay close. However, the Wolves shot well from the charity stripe, where the team converted 21 of 31 attempts. This kept the Panthers at bay and gave the Wolves the win.

R. Wilson led all scorers with 26 for Prescott. Brown chipped in 15, with D. Brewer adding an even dozen.

Ashdown was led by Dee Williamss 21. Antonio May scored 20.

Ashdown was eight of 23 from the line.

WOLVERETTES 32

LADY PANTHERS 33

After a scoreless first quarter for Prescott, the Wolverettes fought back to make a game of it, but fell 33-32 to Ashdowns senior girls.

The first quarter was one in which the Wolverettes simply couldnt buy a bucket no matter what. This proved to be the difference in the game, as Prescott outplayed Ashdown the next three periods.

However, the 12-0 lead Ashdown had at the end of one was enough to give the Lady Panthers a win.

Prescott scored early in the second period to get off the schneid, and picked up the pace on defense, holding the Lady Panthers to six points in the period.

Halftime arrived with the Wolverettes trailing 18-15, but being in the game.

Period three saw Prescott take the lead at 20-18, as the Wolverettes found their stride. But, the last half of the third saw each team score four points. Prescott went to the fourth period with a 24-22 lead.

The Wolverettes missed the first shot of the final period, seeing the Lady Panthers tie the game. Neither squad shot well in the fourth, as Ashdown held a 26-24 lead with 5:03. The score was tied 26-26 with 4:44 as the teams went back and forth.

With 1:24 left Ashdown led 33-28 and saw the Wolverettes cut the lead to one at 33-32. Prescott fired a three with eight ticks on the clock, but missed. Ashdown got the rebound, was tied up, but got the ball as the possession arrow pointed toward the Lady Panthers. This allowed Ashdown to preserve the win.

The Wolverettes shot well from the charity stripe, hitting 11-18, while Ashdown was a woeful seven of 20.

Daloris Stueart led Prescott with 16.

Ashley Grimes and Jessica Hubbard had nine each for Ashdown.
