Prescott takes two from DevilsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, December 14, 2005 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott sent Gurdon packing with wins in the senior contests Friday, Dec. 9. The Wolves made it exciting, blowing double-digit leads, but pulling out a 56-55 win, while the Wolverettes simply manhandled the Lady Devils 41-29 in their game. Wolves 56 Devils 55 Gurdon managed to score first on a three-pointer from Kentrell Green, who was deadly from the arc all night, or at least when he got open for a shot. It was a typical Prescott-Gurdon game, physical all over the court and positively brutal in the paint, with both teams racing up and down the court from start to finish. The Devils built a 13-7 lead, with Prescott fighting back to cut Gurdons advantage to 16-12 at the end of one. The second period saw Prescott rally, and tie the game at 16-16 with 6:53 left in the frame. The Wolves stepped up their game, going on an 11-0 run in taking a 23-16 lead. Prescott extended its lead to 26-18, only to see the Devils battle back cutting the lead to 26-21. Once again, Prescott stepped up and ended the half with a 32-24 advantage. The Wolves were all over the floor in the second half, building the lead to 39-28. Prescott could never relax as Gurdon refused to go away. The Devils fought back, cutting the lead to 43-38 with 1:43 left, and tied the game at 43-43 with 53 seconds to go in the period. Prescott scored the final bucket to lead 45-43 heading into the final eight minutes. The Wolves went on a 6-2 run early on, only to see the Devils respond and tie the game at 51-51 with 2:45 left. But, Prescott was in the bonus situation and going to the line on every foul. With a little over a minute to go, the officials blew a call that could have cost Prescott the game. The ball went out of bounds, with the official closest to the play ruling it had been touched by a Gurdon player and giving the ball to the Wolves. However, an off side official, overruled the call, saying Prescott last touched the ball and gave it to Gurdon. From there it was a back and forth game. Gurdon led 53-52 with 49 seconds left, only to see Prescott go up 54-53 with 33 seconds left. The Devils regained the lead at 55-54 with 8.9 seconds showing, with Prescott going to the line with 6.7 seconds remaining. At this point the game could have gone either way, including into overtime. However, Jacob Brown stepped up and hit nothing but net with both free throws to give the Wolves the 56-55 win. Free throws proved to be the difference as the Wolves netted 16-26. Gurdon was 2-2. Roshaun Wilson was the games leading scorer with 17 points. Dominis Brewer added a dozen, with Brown chipping in 11. Green led Gurdon with 16 points, followed by Rashad Ritchies 12 and 11 from Jerome Caldwell. Wolverettes 41 Lady Devils 29 Gurdon led throughout the first half as the Wolverettes were unable to find the answer to the Lady Devilss press. Again it was a typical Prescott-Gurdon game with plenty of elbows, action and physical play, along with bodies on the court. The first half went slowly because of walks, travels and fouls. In fact, Prescott had three starters in foul trouble much of the half, while Gurdon had four with at least three fouls and riding the pines. Gurdon managed a 6-4 lead at the end of one as neither team could score, and held a 16-13 lead at the break. The second half was completely different as the Wolverettes took control, outscoring the Lady Devils 16-8 to take a 29-24 lead. The turnabout was in part by Daloris Steuart finding her range and Danielle Wilson stepping up her game as well. It was all Prescott in the fourth quarter, though Gurdon scored first and continued to press. Prescott connected on 11-21 from the charity stripe, while Gurdon hit 12-23. Steuart led all scorers scorching the net for 23 points. Wilson chipped in 11. Tina Fulton led Gurdon with 13. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
