Court declares vacancyBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, November 23, 2005 in the Nevada County Picayune A vacancy was declared on the Nevada County Quorum Court following the death of Leo Holleman. Holleman had been ill for a while, but died Nov. 9, at UAMS in Little Rock. Dana Stone, deputy prosecuting attorney, said the Court had to declare a vacancy, then approve a resolution once it has been published. Nevada County Judge James Roy Brown informed the panel all it had to do at its Nov. 14, meeting was declare the vacancy. The resolution will be published declaring the vacancy and letters will be sent to Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with the reason for the vacancy, and with the names of those who express interest in the position. Huckabee will check on those interested, then make an appointment to fill out the remainder of Hollemans term. This, Brown said can be handled at the December meeting, as theres no need for a special meeting to deal with it. In addition, whoever Huckabee appoints will not be eligible to run for the office next year. Justice of the Peace terms are two years in duration. The Courts December decision will be to pass a resolution approving the governors appointment. Brown said he made a mistake at the annual meeting of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce. At the meeting he announced his intentions not to seek reelection. He admitted he should have told the Court first, but said it seemed to be the right time at the Chamber meeting. Ive been asked why Im not running, Brown said. Ive got 40 credited years as retirement, serving 20 years in elected positions. Im 57 years old and want to enjoy life some. Ive enjoyed the biggest part of the time Ive served, but when you have ice storms, snow storms and tornadoes, you wont enjoy them. I may wish I ran more someday, but Ill still help any way I can. The Court approved the millage for the City of Prescott. This is an annual millage approval, and doesnt mean the taxes will be raised. It simply means the city can continue collecting its millage. Brown said there has been a problem with the fines collected for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AG&FC). The fines collected in the county are supposed to be returned to the county and used for the Hooked on Fishing program. The problem with the money is, we havent got it yet.
