Devils win 27-21 over BearsPublished Wednesday, October 12, 2005 in the Gurdon TimesIt was an uneventful first quarter with penalties like aiding a runner trying to slow the Go-Devils down. The officials were not kind to the Go-Devils, as the Springhill Bears tried to take their home stadium advantage. But Gurdon prevailed, 27-21, securing another conference win in the 7AA. This victory put the Gurdon Go-Devils at 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. This coming Friday, Oct. 14, the Go-Devils will come home to play the Mineral Springs Hornets at 7:30 p.m. on the Go-Devil Stadium. It was 6-0 Gurdon after the first quarter against Springhills Bears, and the momentum was already mounting for the Go-Devils. Jonathan Lacy ran 100 yards on 5 carries during the first quarter. In the second quarter, Gurdon had the ball deep in the Springhill territory. Then it was a safety and the Go-Devils went 8-0. Gurdon took a free kick. The 2 points they earned were probably the first defensive points for the season for the Go-Devils. Jonathan Lacy took a 21-yard run to show off his speed to the Bears. The Go-Devils would make one more touchdown before the second quarter ended. At halftime, Gurdon led 14-0. Springhill got on the board in the third quarter, making it 14-6 but the 2-point conversion was no good. Still Springhill was gaining momentum. But Jonathan Lacy came on strong and got a touchdown. This was a 65-yard run touchdown, making it 20-6. Robert Plyler kicked the extra point up and it is good. So Jonathan Lacy had 188 yards and six carries at that point of the game. But the score after Plyler made the extra point, was 21-6 Gurdon. With 2:50 to go in the third, Plyler smashes a Bear. With 1:37 in the third quarter, it was Gurdon first and 10. The third ended, and the fourth quarter began, with that score remaining 21-6, Go-Devils. OBryan Bell ran 15 yards on two carries in that third quarter. A freshman who moved up from Junior High School earlier this season, Bell may be young but continues to play competitively. But then it happened that Springhill split the Gurdon safeties and headed for a touchdown. So the score went to 21-12 and then the -2-point conversion was good, making it 21-14. With 8:13 to go in the ball game, Quarterback Daniel Francis has been playing excellent for the evening, both offensively and defensively. The double hand-off was practiced by the Go-Devils. This tapped talents in players like Camron Kennedy and OBryan Bell. Jonathan Lacy went down the middle and made another touchdown, putting it 27-14 with 5:46 to go. The kick was no good. With 4:07 left, Camron Kennedy made an amazing interception. Kennedy even made a vertical leap to get the football. But there was a penalty on the play, with no sensible explanation. The Springhill Bears were given the ball. Gurdon Coach John Pace did not look pleased. Springhill shoved on in for a touchdown, making it 27-20 but the extra point was good, and it was 27-21. With 3:40 to go in the ball game, it was the Go-Devils ball. Lacy carried the ball, padding over 200 yards in rushing. Camron Kennedy went up the middle and got a third down. With 2:28 to go, Jonathan Lacy, the runner for the game, came out limping. Springhill dutifully tried to get Gurdon to quit running out the clock, but there was only 1:41 left in the ball game. The clock continued to tick, but Coach Pace had something in mind with his passing game. The football game got scary for Gurdon, as a fumble slowed things down. With 45 seconds left to go in the game, the Go-Devils got the ball back. Springhill played tough football but could not pull it out. It was the first win of the season on the road for Gurdon, with the Go-Devils winning 27-21. Jonathan Lacy had 241 yards of rushing on 17 carries. A crucial fumble recovery was also significant in turning the game toward Gurdon. Kenneth Harper executed and was defensive pick. Daniel Francis had a good night, especially defensive side. Francis was three for three on passes. The conference win puts Gurdon in a good position for a playoff spot. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
