Devils fall to Outlaws in overtime battle, 9-6BY JOHN NELSONPublished Wednesday, October 5, 2005 in the Gurdon Times The Gurdon Go-Devils played with heart Friday night against conference rival, the Dierks Outlaws, but the home team lost 9-6 in overtime. The game was a series of bumping heads in the middle of the field, with the first touchdown coming from the Outlaws with 4:42 left in the third quarter. The loss puts the Go-Devils 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Coach John Pace said to his team, "This was a good game. You have nothing to hold your heads down about. "We played with lots of heart out there. If we keep doing that, we will win a lot of games. I am proud of you." The Go-Devils go on the road Friday, Oct. 7, when they take on the Springhill Bears. The Junior Go-Devils, with Coach Hank Lewis, traveled to England this week and won a Gurdon victory, 22-6. The story for the Gurdon Go-Devils Friday night was a game of strong defense and holding their own, but Dierks broke the 0-0 spell first. Still, their extra point was no good, which left it 6-0 and then it was the Go-Devils turn. OBryan Bell, with 11:49 left in the fourth, ran a miraculous 60 yards for a Go-Devil touchdown. Both stands were virtually full and nearly everyone in the home stands stood up and cheered. But the Go-Devils could not make the extra point either and the scored remained 6-6 until the clock ran out on the fourth quarter. Then it was overtime with Gurdons Robert Plyler losing the toss and the Outlaws with first chance to score. Dierks took advantage of that break and made a field goal, putting it 9-6. Gurdon had a chance to attempt a touchdown and come back, but it just was not meant to be. The halftime score showed a scoreless ball game, but Gurdon had 22 plays and 44 yards of offense. Go-Devil Jonathan Lacy, in the first half, rushed the ball eight times for 13 yards. Go-Devil OBryan Bell rushed the ball nine times for 11 yards. But the Gurdon offense could not connect, nor could the Outlaws do any better. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
