It was dedication time at Prescott High School, Tuesday, Sept. 20.

The new multi-purpose complex and field house were officially dedicated with members of the Prescott School Board, the architect firm of Trull and Hollensworth, city officials and members of the general populace present for the ceremony.

Prescott Superintendent Hyacinth Deon welcomed everyone, saying she appreciated the patrons of the district passing a millage so the facility could be built. The new structure replaces the old Family and Consumer Science (formerly Home Economics) building and field house. The old FACS building, she said, was in deplorable condition and has been torn down.

A pavilion has been built where the old FACS building was.

The official welcome, though, was given by Prescott High School Principal Carroll Purtle, who said everyone is proud of the new facility and the students are treating it with pride. We appreciate your looking after the children with these buildings and facilities.

Along with housing the FACS classroom and lab, the complex houses two distance learning labs, one of which can be converted into a regular classroom if the need arises.

There are also two external restrooms for Curley Wolf fans to use during home games. This helps reduce the congestion at the concession stand.

Prescott Mayor Howard Taylor said the new facility is a great blessing and asset for the community. When people settle in Prescott they can feel good about the schools, and this also helps attract new business and industry.

Things wear out and need to be replaced, he said. Its the same for schools. I feel good about the community passing the millage, its an honor to be part of the program and Im thankful for the system and everyone involved.

Deon said when the district asked for the millage there were several things the administration wanted to do. She gave a PowerPoint presentation detailing the goals set and accomplished since the millage was passed.

Along with the multi-purpose complex, restrooms and field house, the millage paid for new fencing around Cummins Field, connected all buildings on the PHS campus with awnings to keep students from getting wet when it rains, resurfaced and improved the track, installed a new intercom system, bought new lockers, installed new entry doors, renovated the old gym and added baseball equipment.

At McRae Middle School, the millage helped renovate the main office, install an intercom system, replace old heating and air conditioning units, cover walkways to outer classrooms and cover the back and front porches of the fifth and sixth grades.

For Prescott Elementary School, improvements include replacing a roof on the first grade hall, replacing old H/AC units, improving the playground to make it more safe, added a new special education complex for classroom, physical therapy, occupational therapy and a conference room.

These goals, Deon said, were originally written in 1999.
