Go-Devils lose part 2

Published Wednesday, September 21, 2005 in the Gurdon Times

Eric Major of Junction City made a pass interception and got another touchdown, making it 29-13 Go-Devils.

The two-point conversion attempt by Junction City was not good, so the score remained the same. There was 4:13 seconds left in the third period.

Duncan took the quarterback position for some extended playing time.

Then action started again and it was first down Go-Devils. Kennedy was playing hard.

Duncan ran it up the field, with a quarterback scramble and gained a few yards. It was first down Go-Devils at the Junction City 48 yard line.

Duncan handed it off to Green. At third and 10, it was handed to Jonathan Lacy, but it was a fumble. It was the third turnover for the Go-Devils and it was Junction Citys football.

With 59 seconds left in the third quarter, the coaches let the third quarter time run down. So it was 29-13 at the end of the third quarter, Go-Devils.

Team wise, the Go-Devils had 290 yards rushing after the third. Game wise, Gurdon had possessed the ball 17:18.

The Go-Devils had the ball coming into the start of the fourth quarter. Things looked good for Gurdon with 11:14 and counting in that final quarter.

Then Sinian Hilton for Junction City recovered the ball. DeAndre Williams and Jonathan Lacy went to work in defense to stop Junction City, but the Dragons were second and two on the 30 yard line. As for then, Junction Citys Justin Easton scored and it was 29-19, with the extra point coming.

It appeared to be the same pattern as last year, in a way, with Junction trying to make a comeback.

So it was now 29-21, with the two-points good. That made four fumbles for Gurdon. Momentum was with the Dragons, but with 9:45 to go.

But Gurdon did have the ball at its 49-yard line. So it will be Francis Daniel quarterbacking. The Go-Devils had good field position, and Jonathan Lacy gained two yards.

As the 9:00 mark is approached, Duncan came in as quarterback. Kennedy got a four to five yard gain, And it was holding on the offense.

It is second and 15 for the Go-Devils. It is down center and Coach Pace calls time out.

It is 7:57 to go in the ball game. Duncan is in the ball game. Jonathon Lacy and Kennedy are behind him.

Green will punt. With 7:08 to go, Junction City has the ball. Go-Devils Robert Plyler and Francis made the first initial hit to slow the Dragons up.

Then Easton is the tailback this time. Incomplete pass. So Duncans Gurdon defense helped. Then Plyler stopped the ball carrier.

So with 5:49 left in the game, a snap and punt, so Gurdon took over at its 43. The Go-Devils needed a final touchdown and to run the clock out.

Green, Jonathan Lacy and the I formation came together. Two yards were gained, but the clock was ticking at 5:05.

Then Gurdon drove Junction Citys defense backwards. Kennedy went up the middle and got a couple of yards.

Now then at the 48, the Go-Devils with 3:50 to go in the ball game, Kentrell Green punts it, then its at the three-yard line, taken over deep in their own territory. Junction City took over the ball.

Then it was 29-27 ball game. Junction City scored an 88 yard touchdown.

Then there was a flag. Officials called unsportsmanlike conduct on Gurdon. They gave the Dragons a play on the one and one half yard line, but Plyler stopped it for Gurdons defense.

It was still 29-27 Gurdon with 3:00 in the game.

The Go Devils needed a touchdown in the worst way. Kennedy picked up the ball and Gurdon took over on their 29-yard line. With 2:20 to go in the ball game, the competition had turned into a barnburner.

Fourth down and five yards with Go-Devil offense, his teammates handed the ball to Jonathan Lacy. Green does a good punt.

And its back to the original line of scrimmage, but negated by a great return by Junction City. So now its Dragons to go. Touchdown Junction City makes it 33-29, with Junction City leading for first time in the game.

Francis throws the ball, Prado was the intended receiver of the incomplete pass.

Francis went into shotgun formation. Junction City scored again on an interception, making it 39-29. It was the unexpected swan song for the Go-Devils evening.

Extra two points were no good, so it was still 39-29. Go-Devil confidence waned, but Junction City scored 26 fourth quarter points.

Francis is in shotgun with six seconds left. 39-29, Junction City defeats Gurdon.

Paces notation early in the season about talent in the Go-Devils was proven valid in the first three quarters against second ranked Junction City.

With 326 yards of offense, Gurdon should have dominated the entire game. But the Go-Devils fumbled the football four times. The stats on paper had Gurdon winning the ball game but five turnovers helped bring on an unexpected defeat.

Kennedy had 19 rushes and 173 yards.
