George McDowellPublished Wednesday, August 31, 2005 in the Nevada County PicayuneMr. George Richard McDowell, 58, died August 26, 2005, in his home in Hope. He was born September 24, 1946, in Hope to Ray and Mildred Tarpley McDowell. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hope and former member of the Hope Chamber of Commerce. He graduated from Arkansas Tech University, where he was a member of the student senate, Arkansas Tech University football and baseball teams and four year member of ROTC. After completing Officers Advanced Training with the U.S. Army in Ft. Knox; Kentucky, he was stationed with the 3rd Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany, serving as a tank commander near the former East German and Czechoslovakian borders from 1968-1971 and attained the rank of Captain with the U.S. Army. He continued to serve in the Army Reserve for eight more years. He was a Certified Pubic Accountant from 1972 until present until present working both in public practice as well as private practice. He worked for the State of Arkansas at both the Public Service Commission and as a coordinator of fiscal services for the Arkansas Department of Education. He was a member of the Arkansas and American Societies of Certified Public Accountants. He is survived by his wife, Pamela P. McDowell of Hope; his loving children, Amanda Patterson, son-in-law, Trent Patterson and grandson John Trenton Jack of Austin, Texas, Amy Whorton, son-in-law, Dr. Greg Whorton, granddaughter, Hannah and grandson Hayes of Hot Springs; one sister, Judy Morris and husband, Gil of Denton, Texas; one nephew, Major George Michael May and Major Lori May and three daughters of Baltimore, Md.; one niece, Michelle Ward and husband, Rob of Seattle, Wash. Memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at Hammonds Stadium in Hope, with Rev. David Porterfield officiating. Family received friends Tuesday, August 30, 2005, prior to the service, from 4:40-6;30 p.m. at Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Hope, Ark. 71802 or First United Methodist Church, Hot Springs, Ark.
