The Gurdon Chamber of Commerce met Tuesday and decided to change the date and time on the fall auction to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Gurdon High School cafetorium.

Anita Cabe said the original September date conflicted with another event.

As is customary, half of the profits from the auction will go to the Chamber and the other half to a fund to build an auditorium at the high school.

In other business, the group is now selling its annual, collectors Christmas ornaments.

This year the picture illustration on the ornament is the old Hoo Hoo Theater. This is the third year for the project. Those interested in the new ornaments, or possibly still buying a Hoo Hoo Building ornament or one from the second year depicting the old Gurdon High School, should stop by the Cabe Foundation office on First Street.

Cabe said, "The ornament collections are really going to be popular one day. People will be glad that have a whole set."

Under old business, the group asked what happened to putting up a Chamber of Commerce welcome sign for Gurdon.

Cabe said she would like ideas on where to put the sign up. Chamber member Tommy Potter suggested the area between the Senior Adult center and Rehkopfs Grocery.

It was noted that in times of extreme rain a water build-up had been known to accumulate where the sign would be based.

However, that location and a second one on the other side of Main Street will be considered.

"I will try and get our sign location agreed on by whoever is in charge of where we want to put it by the September Chamber meeting," Cabe said.

Moreover, Potter told the group about the latest development with Gurdon Pond Number Two and the effort to refill it. He said Blue Sky Timber Properties, a spin-off from International Paper, is considering giving the project an extra 50-75 acres, or at least making the land inexpensive and possible to buy.

"Congressman Mike Ross is still going to Washington to try and get the $314,000 we need to make this dream come true at the lake, but this extra land could mean a pavilion, RV park or added recreational facility. It could help attract new people to Gurdon," Potter said.

In new business, Potter asked the Chamber to buy bright yellow shirt dots for name tags to be used as a reward for registering as a former Gurdon student at the alumni table in Faith Mission to be set up the day of the Forest Festival, Saturday, Oct. 29.

The Chamber voted to look into the expense of the paper dots, which are said to be approximately 2.5 inches, at Hobby Lobby or the Paper Factory in Hot Springs "and probably take part in the student name gathering effort."
