City Council extends trash hauling contractBY JOHN NELSONPublished Wednesday, August 10, 2005 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's City Council met Monday, and passed a motion to extending the contract of Gurdon trash hauler A&M Equipment Company, of Little Rock, until the last of October. Tambra Childres, treasurer and recorder, said Thursday, "We did that so A&M would have an opportunity to monitor such factors as an increase in fuel costs before presenting our city with the terms of a new trash contract. "We are hoping there will be no request for increase in price per customer." In other business, Mayor Clayton Franklin warned dog owners to beware, as dogcatcher Matt Dickerson will be out at odd evening hours to catch violators of the leash law. "Matt says to expect the unexpected," Childres said. "Dogs must be on a leash. And, Matt would like to remind dog owners to keep plenty of water and good shelter available to their pets during the summer heat." In other business, the council passed two resolutions to move small amounts of money from two old accounts to the city's general fund. Franklin said the special accounts were from the Gurdon Hospital sale, and monies still available amounted to $423.25. Moreover, a report was given on the cemetery fund. Franklin said donations are short $1,400 for the year. "We are still in good shape in the actual cemetery fund, but the low donations are a concern," Franklin said. "We are considering dunning them one more time." In other business, the mayor told Council members Statewide Asphalt has been on a break but still intends to finish paving the streets this summer. They are to return the first part of August. Franklin said there is yet to be $136,000 worth of paving done. The walking trail is to come from a separate fund. "When they get back over here, we will have them get on the walking trail too," he said. "I would still like to see people getting to use it this fall." The mayor gave an update on the caboose at the city park, which is being turned into a playhouse. Bars have been installed on the windows and wood will be used to redecorate the inside. "We've had to spend about $1,000 on it so far," Franklin said, "but it will be nice once we are finally through. I am not sure at this point when we can finish it, but it will be as soon as possible." The mayor said International Paper is donating wood for the caboose remodeling, and city worker Rick Shelton is helping with the labor especially with the bars on the windows.
