WALLET STOLENPublished Wednesday, March 24, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneA wallet was removed from a purse at the Beverly Health Center Wednesday, March 17. The incident occurred between 9:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. and ended with the arrest of one of the residents of the center. Pam Burns reported the wallet had been taken from her purse, which was in an office at the time. It contained a total of $735 in cash. About the time the wallet was discovered missing, resident John Johnson, 35, signed himself out to go to town. He had been heard bragging about having plenty of money, though shortly before it was known he had none. Sorrells said the investigation led to Johnson, who later admitted the crime, saying he spent the money on alcohol and drugs. Johnson, Sorrells said, apparently went to a local crack house and spent some of the money for drugs. A search of his room at the center turned up a pipe believed to be used for smoking crack cocaine. Johnson was arrested by PPD officer Wayne Sorrells and was charged with theft of property, commercial burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is currently being held in the Nevada County Jail. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
