In the blink of an eye it will be time for the annual Nevada County Fair.

This years fair and rodeo will be held Aug. 27 through Sept. 3, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Once again, Candy Land Amusements will provide the midway and carnival. The theme is Strutting Your Stuff at the Nevada County Fair.

The Nevada County Fair Board met Monday, June 13, to discuss plans for this years fete. Becky Holley said the man who was going to handle the rodeo went out of business, selling all of his stock.

However, she contacted Wendell Cox about the situation and he has said he can put on a good high school rodeo for the fair. This will be scheduled for Aug. 27. The Board, she said, would be responsible for all the advertising, while he takes care of everything else.

Lisa McClure is returning as the director of the annual fair queen pageants, and has added a new category infants 0-11 months. It should be good this year, Holley said.

The idea of having the rodeo, which will be out of Hope, on the first night of the fair is to have the second Saturday open for the pageant.

Now, there could be a rather interesting ride at this years fair a mechanical bull. Holley has been negotiating with someone who has one and may bring it up for Sept. 2-3.

They may be an interesting vendor at the fair as well. Holley said Clarence Sweeney, of New Boston, Texas, wants to set up a booth. He has agreed not to sell anything being handled by Candy Land Amusements. However, he will be offering temporary tattoos, if he comes.

The Board agreed to have the gospel singing the day after the rodeo, and will try to get some local church choirs involved. The gospel singing has always been a popular event during the fair.

Starting Monday, Aug. 29, will be the animal check in, with this finishing up Tuesday, Aug. 30. Tuesday evening will be the parade, with the floats judged at the Central Baptist Church parking lot before it starts.

Rex Dollar said there have been queries about a shooting gallery at the fair. This, he told the Board, is some kind of competition, with an obstacle course.

Basically, he said, the Board would provide the location, and those putting on the display would handle everything else. This will be looked into for more specific information. Should it be done, it will be in the rodeo arena.

The carnival and midway will open Wednesday, with the premium livestock sale to be held Thursday, the first day of the pageant.

Brandi Karlovec said the talent show will be held Tuesday night, with the winner performing at Saturdays pageant. Those interested in performing can get an application at the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce. Deadline to enter, though, is Aug. 18.

Holley said the deadline to enter the pageants is Aug. 15, with entry forms also available at the Chamber.
