Health fair plans discussedBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, June 15, 2005 in the Nevada County Picayune Plans continue for the annual Health-A-Rama. This years event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Potlatch Building in the Nevada County Fairgrounds. One of the reasons for the move is the availability of the stage, and plans include demonstrations for those who come to the event. At the June meeting of the Prescott-Nevada County Health Alliance, Edie Greenwood said St. Josephs will provide a bone density screening for the Health-A-Rama. The Health-A-Rama will offer screenings for different health problems. Some of the screenings include blood sugar, cholesterol and high blood pressure. Others include a prostate blood test, body mass index and glaucoma. In addition, tables will be set up with information about different health problems and solutions on them. There will also be some games for youngsters. Patrons who get all the screenings done can save hundreds of dollars and be told if they need to see their doctor or not. Kris Abercrombie, with the literacy council, said Dr. Chad Rogers has been in a conference in Chicago. Dr. Rogers will be in Prescott Wednesday, June 29, to talk about health literacy. Abercrombie said this isnt an accurate description of what he will be talking about. In fact, his talk will be on health communication between medical personnel and patients. Phil McAdams, PNCHA president, said the idea behind getting Dr. Rogers to come to Prescott was a collaboration between the PNCHA, the Rotary Club and the Tri-Service Club. McAdams added, as many as possible who work in the health fields will be contacted about the seminar, which will be held at the community room of the Collom and Carney Clinic. Dr. Rogers, he said, attended Baylor University and the University of Arkansas Medical Science school and has been in private practice for three years now. His interest, according to McAdams, is preventative health care. Abercrombie said what Dr. Rogers does is work to make sure there is proper communication between health care professionals and patients, and that its all right for patients to ask questions if they dont understand something their doctor is saying. Karen Richards said a grant has tentatively been approved to help with smoking prevention. The amount of the grant, she added, changed a bit, but the new program will begin July 1, but she isnt sure where he office will be. Janet McAdams said she will contact the smoking cessation group and see if they are willing to come back to Prescott in some manner. According to Richards and McAdams, the smoking cessation program held last year was successful. Further planning for the Health-A-Rama has been scheduled for July 14, at 7 a.m. This meeting will be held at the Broadway. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
