The Gurdon Police Department was scheduled to receive a "badly needed" new Ford Crown Victoria police car, as of Friday, June 3.

Tambra Childres, recorder and treasurer, said the police department has been operating with one car for the past few weeks because of mechanical problems on the other one.

"It has been several years since we have had a new police car and we just need something where Gurdon can be ready for high speed chases or whatever emergency comes up," she said.

The 2005 Crown Victoria will come from Northpoint Ford in Little Rock, as that company has the state contract for police vehicles.

"We do not have to take bids if we go with the state contract people," Childres said.

The car itself, with the big eight cylinder police motor, is valued at $20,362. However, an additional $5,000 worth of accessories will have to be installed before the vehicle is road ready.

"We have to rig it out," she said. "We will need the radio system, the police cage, the light bar and the sirens. It just has to be gotten ready for use."

According to Childres, the purchase required a $2,500 down payment from the city, that is 10 percent to close the deal.

She said the Cabe Foundation paid the down payment.

"We are really appreciative of the Cabe Foundation for this," Childres said. "We will have it rigged out and in use within a week or two."
