Spring sports complete

Prescott had a good year in spring sports, according to Greg Smith, athletic director.

Smith said the seventh and eighth grade track teams are in the SWAR Track League, giving them three meets to attend this year. There are three sites the thinclads to go, with the meets rotated.

Participation in senior high track was down this year, he said, in both boys and girls teams. However, with the addition of the freshman class to the squads, both teams had more than 30 athletes.

Ray Smith, a freshman at PHS, qualified for the state meet at Nashville by setting a new conference record in the triple jump with a leap of 43-5.

The junior boys track team posted an undefeated season (see related story), while the junior girls team improved throughout the year.

Participation, Smith said, was up in softball, with the seniors providing important leadership all season long. Brian Nivens was the head coach.

Prescotts baseball team posted a 13-8 record over the year, winning two invitational tourneys and almost going to the regional tournament. The 7AAA, Smith said, is a tough conference from top to bottom.

Prescott hosted two weight meets this spring. One was a metal meet with the other a practice meet. Both had plenty of competition and effort on the part of the athletes. The metal meet, he said, saw 20 personal records set.

Karen Ward is getting ready for the 2005-2005 cheerleading season, he said, with Prescott earning the Regional Cheerleading Competition for the second year in a row.

Coach Larry Newsom is working on a summer basketball camp, and has put a junior high tourney together for next year with several top notch teams already committed to playing in it.

Summer football activities are getting underway as well, with plans for a speed camp and a senior high team camp at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. Prescott will also participate in 7-on-7 football, and, for the first time, host a Southwest Arkansas individual football camp in July.

The fall sports calendar is being done differently, Smith said. Instead of paying someone else to do it, the EAST Lab students will be designing and printing the calendars this year.

Ads will be sold for the calendar, with the proceeds being split between the EAST Lab and athletic department. This means keeping the money in Prescott instead of seeing it go out of town.

Smith thanked those who have helped out during the year, We couldnt do it without a strong community support, and we are blessed in the Prescott School District to have this support.
