Gurdon grocery opens ThursdayBY JOHN N ELSONPublished Wednesday, June 1, 2005 in the Gurdon Times Rehkopfs Hometown Market of Gurdon opened for business at 7 a.m. Thursday, May 26. The parking lot was about half full by 8 a.m., with familiar faces inside and out. Store owner Ron Rehkopf said, "We really should have waited another week to start, but the people wanted us open so here we are." As to the staff, Rehkopf said the hiring was going well but is still in process. He was sacking groceries on that first morning. Jan Young, store manager, said the store opened at 7 a.m. on its first day of business and "everything is working just fine." "We are really pleased to be here and things are going real good," she said. Evelyn Glover, who has been a cashier at the local Gurdon grocery for nearly 25 years, was also back on the job Thursday morning. "It is really good to be back at work," she said. "I am enjoying this morning." Gurdon businessman Jim Crews came in to buy some cereal and a bananas, and to just look around. "I am glad to see this open," he said. Charles Shaver, who substitute teaches at Gurdon Primary School, said he was just wanting to look around. He greeted Glover with a smile. Cindy Loe, postal worker, said she was so glad the grocery was open and that, if nothing else, she would buy a candy bar there everyday to show support. Rehkopf said the hours of the new store will be 7 a.m. until 9 p.m., seven days a week. There is to be a conventional section, as well as Hispanic and dollar sections. "We will provide a very nice hometown supermarket, well inventoried and convenient," he said. "and we specialize in a good meat program."
