Plans coming together for annual Health-A-Rama

Published Wednesday, May 25, 2005 in the Nevada County Picayune

There will be no changing of the name of the Nevada County Health-

A-Rama.

Members of the Prescott-Nevada County Health Alliance (PNCHA), agreed to leave the name the same so as not to confuse area residents.

However, one change was made the location of the event. Because the PNCHA is working to get more demonstrations, the Health-A-Rama has been moved to the Potlatch Building at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Edie Greenwood, with the Nevada County Health Unit, said the prostate cancer van will be at the fairgrounds for the event, and everything for prostate checks is paid for. This, she added, is part of the Mayors Prostate Campaign, a nationwide push where mayors of several cities across the country are working to get the word out about prostate cancer.

Greenwood said the prostate cancer organization wrote a grant and Nevada County will get $1,500 to spend. However, the money must be spent by the end of June. She said the money will be used to purchase tests for men. For the prostate checks at the Health-A-Rama, she added, the PNCHA must provide a doctor.

For the most part, there are no other changes for the Health-A-Rama. There will still be booths where patrons can get information on different health topics, along with the different health screenings. These screenings include: blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure, among others.

There will be a planning session for the Health-A-Rama at 7 a.m., Thursday, June 9, at the Broadway.

Janet McAdams said there had been a breast outreach on May 1, with 10 churches participating. Each church had a designated volunteer and presented the women with different gifts. We reached several hundred people in the county.

Philip McAdams, PNCHA president, said the PNCHA could distribute information at the 18th Annual Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Chicken and Egg Festival, June 4-5. This information could be handed out at the single parent scholarship booth.

Dr. Chad Rodgers, a Little Rock pediatrician, has a program on health literacy he would like to present locally. Janet McAdams said the program helps put doctors and patients on the same page.

This, she said, is done on a volunteer basis by Dr. Rodgers. He plans on coming to Prescott June 29. The session will be held at the Collum and Carney Clinics community room, with lunch to be catered. The session will be from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Invitations will be sent out.
