Electric situation remains uncertain

Published Wednesday, May 25, 2005 in the Nevada County Picayune

No action was taken on Prescotts electricity situation at the monthly meeting of the Prescott City Council.

In fact, the issue wasnt mentioned until the meeting was almost over and someone questioned the council about it. Prescott Mayor Howard Taylor said he and Larry Stockton, superintendent of the electric department, have nothing to bring before the council at this time, but are looking at other options.

He added a special meeting may be needed soon to discuss the electric problem.

The Council voted to purchase a new vehicle from Golden Hart of Camden for $24,772. The city is buying this car from the depreciation fund. This will become the mayors car, and the vehicle hes currently using will be cycled to the Prescott Police Department to replace one of the two cars currently down.

One of the vehicles has been used as the citys drug car but it must be sold under court order. Its also broken down at this time. Taylor said the car will be sold with the court deciding how much it will take from the sale. The rest will go to the city.

An ordinance to increase the number of members of the Prescott Park and Recreation Commission was approved, thereby raising the number from five to seven. The original ordinance was passed in 1974.

Taylor said nine people applied for positions to the commission. Six were from inside the city limits with three from the county. The Council tabbed Steve Robinson, Billie Haynie and Tracy Rooker from the city, and Rhonda Ledbetter and Bud Hendricks from the county. Taylor said all have been involved with Park activities.

Steve Crow, parks director, talked to the Council about work done at the James Jones Sports Complex. Four doors had to be replaced there, and he had this done without getting estimates. However, the cost was considerably more than expected at $5,000. If Id known, he said, I would have gotten estimates.

The new doors are metal, and other repair work was done as well.

The council asked to be informed prior to having such work done in the future.

Taylor pointed out if there was a full commission, the chairman would be the one addressing the Council.

Danny Beavert, councilman, said most of the damage at the complex was because of rain and water flooding into the concession stand, along with vandals. We need to do something or well be doing it again.

Crow said theres a lot of baseball and softball going on now, with 25 baseball teams playing in all, along with six girls softball teams. The teams playing include Prescott, Gurdon, Lewisville and Spring Hill, and all three fields are being used.

Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, brought the beautification trophy the city won to show the Council members. Were proud of it, she said. It shows weve been dedicated, and not just planting flowers. The award included all the beautification work done by the committee.

Were doing a lot of spring cleanup around town, she said. Weve been mowing, weed eating, cleaning and picking up garbage. Were not working on the signs (at the city limits) but we will after the festival. I hope to be done by the end of the summer.

The festival, she said, is June 4-5, and will basically have the same format. One major difference will be a Saturday concert from 5-8 p.m. featuring Randy McKinnon and the Bear Creek Boys.

Floyd Clark, the new executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Economic Development Office, introduced himself to the panel. Ive been on the job 12 hours and cant tell you a lot, he said.

Clark informed the Council he grew up in Little Rock, has been married 41 years, to Garnet, has two children, one daughter who works in San Diego, Calif., and another daughter who works in St. Louis, Mo., as an architect. He has four brothers.

Clark has spent the last 36 years in Missouri, with 28 years being in Columbia.

Im happy to be here, he said. I think Prescott is a great place and has a bright future.
