Academic awards total $452,714

Gurdon Academic Awards Ceremony for 2004-2005 took place on Wednesday morning, May 4, in the gym, with the announcement of $452,714 in scholarship money awarded.

Something new this year was the Go-Devil bash award, with senior Lezlee White being the recipient. It was from the GHS graduates of the 1950s and 1960s, and announced by Joe Ann Shaver.

Shaver also announced the CD&E scholarship recipient as senior Britta Halliday.

Counting the classroom awards, more than 100 presentations were made.

Scholarship sources and recipients are listed:

Nancy Happy with the National Parks Community College  Jordan Purifoy; Sunny O'Rear for the Patrick Stone Scholarship  Lezlee White; Elizabeth Wilson for the Red Springs Extension Home makers Club  Haleigh McDaniel and Lezlee White; Allen Wimberly for the Rotary Club Scholarship  Jordan Purifoy; Cindie Escalante, Student Council  Christa Hopson; GHS Principal Leonard Gills for the HSU Alumni Scholarship  Lezlee White; Austin and Mary Lou Capps Scholarship, Katie Barbaree and Hayli Coon; GHS Counselor Rita Guthrie for Arkansas Tech University  Haleigh McDaniel; University of Arkansas, Monticello  Jordan Purifoy and Britta Halliday; Coca Cola, Amy Stiffler and Kolby Harper; Lyons College, Colby Harper; Texarkana College  Kaylin DeVenney; Beta/National Honor Society presentation; vocational completers; recognition of top 10 seniors; academic letters for freshman, sophomore, junior and senior recipients; and Leonard Gills presented the Presidential Excellence award to Tiffany Nolan.

Those going to Boys State this summer will be: Daniel Stroder, Sean O'Connell, Jason Wells and Cody Miller.

As for Girls State, those going will be: Tiffany Nolan, Destiny Talley, Lakeisha Bates and Jodie Swayze. Students of the month were recognized.
