Academic awards total $452,714BY JOHN NELSONPublished Wednesday, May 11, 2005 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon Academic Awards Ceremony for 2004-2005 took place on Wednesday morning, May 4, in the gym, with the announcement of $452,714 in scholarship money awarded. Something new this year was the Go-Devil bash award, with senior Lezlee White being the recipient. It was from the GHS graduates of the 1950s and 1960s, and announced by Joe Ann Shaver. Shaver also announced the CD&E scholarship recipient as senior Britta Halliday. Counting the classroom awards, more than 100 presentations were made. Scholarship sources and recipients are listed: Steve Orsburn, with the First State Bank Scholarship, awarded it to Jordan Purifoy; Sara Abernathy for Henderson State University, awarded scholarships to Jordan Purifoy, Britta Halliday, Amy Stiffler, Blair Griffin, Christa Hopson, Taylor Pace, Taylor Morehead, Lezlee White, Blake Deaton, Katie Barbaree and Christina Daniels; Amy Neathery for Ouachita Baptist University Hayli Coon, Kolby Harper, and Christa Hopson; Stan Escalante for Trio Programs, Ouachita Baptist University Randy Bell, Kolby Harper, Jamelle Lacy and Jeremy Williams; Eddra Phillips for the University of Arkansas at Hope Kaylin DeVenney, Jernik Henry, Hunter Johnson, Calvin Nolan and C.J. Those going to Boys State this summer will be: Daniel Stroder, Sean O'Connell, Jason Wells and Cody Miller. As for Girls State, those going will be: Tiffany Nolan, Destiny Talley, Lakeisha Bates and Jodie Swayze. Students of the month were recognized.
