Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, March 24, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesSpring break! As you probably have already noticed, we are on spring break until Monday, March 29. It seemed to be an unanimous decision that we were ready to observe a week off. Of course, we will be eagerly awaiting the day for us to resume our work. Several students are planning out-of-town trips and some are expecting company from out-of- town during the week. For some, they plan to sleep! The CMS Student Council assembly was held March 17. The 'citizen' students for March are: fifth grader Cody Miller; sixth grader Christa Hopson; seventh grader Joceilyn Brown; and eighth grader Claya Calley. Several of the fifth, sixth and seventh grade students entertained the audience with beautiful music from playing handbells. Under the direction of Jennifer Gates, they held the audience 'spellbound' for three numbers. They played one arrangement twice due to the interest of the audience. They were greatly enjoyed and hopefully they can come again. Mrs. Davies and Mrs. Smithson conducted the drawings for the three Beanie Babies that Thomerson's donated to help raise money to buy more books for the accelerated reading program. Lindette Kadiri, reporter for the CMS Student Council, drew the winning names: Ashley Caviness, Brittney Stroud and Cevin Laster. Congratulations! A big thanks to Thomerson's for the donation of the Beanie Babies. The parent-teacher conferences were a big hit. We really enjoyed the time visiting with parents. Parents are always welcome to call us. Make an appointment and come for a visit when you feel that the need is there to discuss the progress of your child. The very first CMS yearbook is on its way to the publisher. The yearbook staff has really worked hard on this project. We are anxious to see the finished project in May. Ms. Dickens is 'showing off' a picture of her new grandbaby. Grandmothers have that privilege! Congratulations to the parents, but especially Ms. Dickens. A surprise baby shower was given for Mrs. Green, a fifth grade teacher who is expecting a little girl in April. The table that held the gifts was decorated so beautifully in pink and white. We now know that Mrs. Butler can also be a decorator, a talent she had not shared with us before. (But now we know.) Mrs. Green was taken by surprise, but quickly mellowed when she saw what was taking place. So many nice and needed items were given to her. The students gave money that was placed in a big baby bottle. How was the secret kept a secret? Well, we were told not to tell Marianne Roe! (No more is needed to be said.) Mrs. Downey has a computer. (Thank goodness.) She is absolutely beyond control. She couldn't wait until she got moved into her new classroom; that computer was 'plugged up and running' about the time it arrived. We will miss a week of Classy Moments as we are out of school, but remember to read about us in the other issues as we will be back and continue to make those Classy Moments at CMS.
