Chamber builds web siteBY JOHN NELSONPublished Wednesday, March 16, 2005 in the Gurdon Times Chamber of Commerce members voted Tuesday to launch a web site on the Internet called: Gurdonchamberofcommerce.com and hopes to get members to sponsor the site. Jon Capps has been working on getting it ready for publication and agreed to activate the Chamber site on March 9. Links so far include: Hoo Hoo, Henderson, Ouachita, newspapers, Arkadelphia Chamber of Commerce and the two local financial institutions; Gurdon First State Bank and U.S. Bank. Chamber members also voted to pay for a business booster site for the web page on Yahoo.com "to get more traffic on our page." Anita Cabe made a motion to pay Capps a $100 one-time fee for designing the web page and for the Chamber to pay $50 every six months in maintenance fees for the site. The Yahoo business builder search engine will cost the Chamber of Commerce $20 a month. Motions passed on both. The general feeling was if there was going to be a web page, it needs to be opened as often as possible to be effective. Chamber business members wanting a sponsorship advertisement may contact Capps. If a non-Chamber member wants a spot, they must first join the Chamber. In other business, tickets for the upcoming Chamber of Commerce banquet, set for 7 p.m Monday, April 4, at the Gurdon High School Cafetorium, will be $15 this year. Keith Jackson, of Little Rock, will speak on Positive Action Reaches Kids (PARK). Ticket sales will be limited. They are now on sale at U.S. Bank and Gurdon First State Bank. They will be on sale at the door if seating is still available. Cabe said, "We hope people will buy tickets in advance, and we want everyone to have a comfortable seat at the banquet." In old business, Cabe and Valerie Kent are attempting to secure a second location for the Chamber of Commerce welcome sign, where city approval would be enough to place it. Moreover, the Chamber said the old Hoo Hoo theater will be featured on this year's Christmas ornament for the Chamber. The ornaments will have the city train depot on the ornament for the following year, and after that a series on area churches being pictured is under consideration. In other future planning, the Chamber of Commerce auction, which should be held in September this year, is being organized sooner than last year. Chamber President Mary Smith said she would like to see an even larger turnout this year for the auction. "If we have it in September, more of the teachers can take advantage of what we have to offer," Cabe said. "I have already started working on the auction."
