"Struttin' Our Stuff" is fair themeBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 23, 2005 in the Nevada County Picayune "Struttin' Our Stuff" will be the theme of this year's Nevada County Fair. This decision was made by the Nevada County Fair Board Monday, Feb. 14. A list of possible themes was passed among the board members present, but it took little time to agree on "Struttin' Our Stuff at the Nevada County Fair" as the theme. Rebecca Holley, president, said 62 light weight tables have been ordered for the Potlatch Building. These tables are not to be removed from the premises. They are made of a heavy-duty plastic and will replace the metal folding tables currently being used. Holley said Potlatch gave the Board $5,000, if it would match the money to buy the tables. In addition, Potlatch officials stipulated the tables aren't to be removed from the Potlatch Building at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Potlatch will also make a cart for the tables so they can be kept out of the way when not being used. According to Holley, if anyone wants to borrow any tables, they can use the old ones. There was some money left after the new tables were paid for, Holley said, so some new chairs were ordered. The Board agreed to terminate an agreement it had with Kathryn Ray, who had been renting one of the buildings to teach gymnastics. The agreement will be nullified as soon as the last rental check clears the bank. The problem, Holley said, is Ray, who's from Magnolia, was regularly late in paying the rent, and did nothing in the way of cleaning up after her classes. Carol Tyree, Board treasurer, said there is $1,660 in the premium account, which is only used for the livestock premium sale, and $4,266 in the general account. The Board discussed the need for insurance on the buildings at the fairgrounds and will get quotes from local companies. Holley said she had asked for $2,500 from the county for insurance and the Nevada County Quorum Court approved $3,000, but the Prescott City Council has given nothing to help. Tyree said the carnival has been booked. It will be the same one as last year Candyland Amusements. The entire transaction was handled over the phone. Dates for the 69th Annual Nevada County Fair will be Aug. 27 through Sept. 3. Exhibits, Holley said, were down last year. However, the main reason was the wet summer destroyed most gardens. Photo exhibits, she added, were well done. Nevada County schools will be notified earlier this year so they can get floats ready for the fair parade. Ruby Wicker said Diane Wolf, with the Nevada County Extension Service, had suggested having arts and crafts done during the fair so visitors can see how they're done. Last year Holley said she learned of a grant the Board could have used to build a new pavilion. The grant comes through the Nevada County Judge's Office, and this year Holley will try to get the information earlier so the Board can apply for it. The pavilion would be built near the livestock arena, if the grant is approved, and would be used in conjunction with the annual premium sale dinner to provide shade for the bidders while they eat. Tyree said it's also time to start thinking about changes in the fair book, and gathering photos for the new one. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
