Prescott's School Board was "educated" by fourth grade students during the regular meeting Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Josie Beavers showed the board how she would solve a Benchmark test type problem dealing with shapes and values. Each shape has an assigned value, she said.

Beavers made designs using a rhombus and trapezoid, throwing in a triangle at the end of her demonstration.

Kim Hale had Tyler Henderson read a story he wrote, based on the Benchmark test. Students, she said, are given a topic and are expected to write a full story using all the elements.

The topic Henderson wrote on dealt with Hale leaving a box in the classroom, with the box moving after she was called from the room. His story told how the students debated what could be inside it, learning it was filled with puppies at the end.

The Prescott Elementary School report, prepared by Janet Gordon, principal, stated February may be the shortest month of the year, but it has been one of the busiest.

Fourth grade students participated in the National Assessment of Educational Progress test on Feb. 2. This is a national test given to see how fourth grade students across America are doing in math, literacy and/or science.

Julia Ingram received her state required training from the Arkansas Department of Education, Questar and Riverside Publishing for the primary Benchmark and Iowa tests. The training occurred Feb. 3 in Arkadelphia.

Alvis Conway's third and fourth grade gifted and talented students heard about African-American history from two guest speakers. The students also held an indoor parade honoring famous African-Americans.

After school tutoring is continuing, with about 30 third grade students and 25 fourth graders soon to be getting daily tutoring sessions. These sessions will be held Monday through Thursday, and run from Feb. 22 to March 3.

Gordon, Donita Almand and Linda Graham attended the Spring Smart meeting at the Southwest Arkansas Educational Cooperative in Hope recently as well.
