Gus Henry

Gus E. Henry passed away at McCurtain Memorial Hospital on Feb. 8, 2005.

He was born in Alikshi, Okla., January 4, 1926, to Wes Henry and Addie Mae Holt Henry.

He joined the Air Force at age 17 during World War II and after the Air Force and Navy became separate branches, he served in the Navy. Due to injuries, he was medically released from the Navy with 100 percent disability.

He overcame that with a lot of will and determination, and joined the civilian world and worked as a chief guide for Chama Land and Cattle Company. It was there he killed the largest Elk that had been killed in New Mexico at that time.

He moved to Broken Bow in 1970, and married Sammi Jean Callaway Fortner, Feb. 8, 1971. They have been in Broken Bow for the past 34 years, where they were happily married. He worked for Tyson Foods in Broken Bow. He loved to hunt and fish, and had several hunting and fishing buddies here in Broken Bow. He was a great husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his dad and mom; brother, Hal; and brother-in-law, John Brinkley.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Sammie Jean; daughter, Jonna Norton, Orlando, Fla., stepson and wife, Roger and Avis Fortner; grandchildren, Devon and Barrett Fortner, all of Marion; sister, Imogene Brinkley, Spearman, Texas; brothers, Bob Henry, Minneapolis, Minn.; Bruce Henry, Broken Bow; several nieces; and one nephew.

Graveside services were scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at South Fork Cemetery in Gurdon.

Family received friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Brumley Funeral Home. Services were under the direction of Brumley Funeral Home in Broken Bow, Okla.
