Groery store uncertain

A call to the recorder and treasurer of Gurdon revealed a bit of worry about the local grocery store closing here last week at City Hall on Tuesday morning.

Tambra Childres said, "Our tax collections have dropped off some this past year, as our report indicates. I tried to find out who was not paying their sales tax and what percentage each store had from the state treasurer's office, but they told me that was confidential information."

Although unable to give exact figures on what the loss of Hometown Market last week could mean to the sales tax collections in Gurdon, Childres said her common sense tells her the market was "a fairly large and significant sales tax collector.

"We have been hearing the same rumors as everyone else about the future of the grocery store, but to my knowledge nothing has been decided yet," she said. "The big thing is that we need a full grocery store here and the word is out. All we can do is hope that someone really is interested in picking this up."
