Wolves have rough time against Fountain LakeBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 2, 2005 in the Nevada County Picayune Ugly is about the only way to describe the games played by Prescott against Fountain Lake Friday, Jan. 28. The Wolves and Wolverettes both suffered losses in the outing. The Wolves dropped a 48-46 decision, while the Wolverettes fell 40-25. Wolves 46 Cobras 48 The first half of the first quarter was sloppy as neither team seemed to know what was going on. At the 4:11 mark, the score was 3-2 in Prescott's favor. However, the Cobras would rally and outscore the home team 12-6 for the remainder of the period. The majority of scoring for Fountain Lake came from beyond the arc, not because of good, solid play. Period one came to a merciful end with the score 14-9 in Fountain Lake's favor. The Wolves rallied in the second period, racing up and down the court and managed to take the lead at 17-16 with 4:41 showing. Part of the problem for both squads was poor shot selection followed by poor shooting. Halftime arrived with the Wolves holding a slim 24-21 lead. Throughout the game the Wolves ran a man-to-man defense while the Cobras operated out of a triangle-2. This kept Prescott from being able to drive the lane effectively, though Wolf players made the attempt all night. Prescott opened period three by throwing the ball away on its first possession. The Cobras responded with a deuce to cut the lead to 24-23 with 7:23 showing. At times both teams degenerated into what could only be called street ball, as discipline and teamwork went out the window. Still, the Wolves managed to build a six point lead at 34-28 with 3:48 left in the third, only to have the Cobras knot the score with 2:02 remaining. Only two points were scored for the rest of the quarter, and them by the Wolves. Prescott entered period four with a narrow 36-34 advantage, hit the first bucket of the frame, but lost the lead midway through the quarter as the Cobras were better at converting free throws in the clutch. Fountain Lake took a 40-39 lead with 4:09 left in the outing. The Cobras took control of the game in the waning minutes. Prescott's defense appeared to collapse as a Fountain Lake player drove the lane untouched for an easy layup. Fountain Lake led 48-43 with seconds left. Prescott netted a three-pointer for the final score. The Wolves were five of 10 at the line, while Fountain Lake converted eight of 11 free throws. Luther Steuart paced Prescott with 16 points. Mitchell Taylor was next with 11. Charles Stanley led the Cobras with 15. Greg Waligora added 10. Wolves 53 Panthers 54 On Tuesday, Jan. 25, the Wolves made a trip to Ashdown and had the Panthers end a four-game winning streak 54-53. This game was a case of missed free throws being the difference, as Ashdown was two of six, while the Wolves were 10 of 27. The Panthers opened the contest taking a 9-8 lead at the end of one. Both teams scored 18 points in the second frame, giving Ashdown a one-point lead at the break, 27-26. Prescott took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Panthers 15-12 to go up 41-39. However, the Panthers returned the favor with a 15-12 fourth quarter for the one-point win. Steuart led the way for Prescott with 25 points. Sean Hart added 13.
