Artesian Arts and Letters

The title of this column is really bad, so we're having a Name the Arts League Column contest. The winner will receive $20. Send entries to me by October 1 at the address below.

Books wanted:

September is National Literacy Month, and books and readers are an important part of the arts. Those of us who make our living with words understand only too well the importance of communication and learning through the written word. AAL wants to encourage everyone to support our local literacy council, which is collecting books for a future fund-raiser. Instead of putting your books in a yard sale, donate them to literacy. Paperbacks, hardbacks, non-fiction, any book is welcome. The drive will be ongoing and they plan for the sale to be a yearly activity. Bring all unwanted books to the Learning Center at 304 E. Vine. Please help the literacy council and the arts league help others.

Fair news:

Congratulations to Roy and Betty Cagle, AAL members and winners of the Adirondack chair and chiminea. For those who didn't join during the fair, it's still not too late. Contact Melva Morman at 887-3739.

A round of applause to all the winners who entered their artwork in the fair, especially AAL member Drew Richards who won a blue ribbon in the junior landscape division. We hope to have even greater participation next year.

Coffee-poetry reading:

There's still time to be included in the coffee and poetry reading to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 18, at City Hall. Contact me at the number below if you want to read. Non-readers need to just show up for coffee and sweets.

Wanted: businesses, clubs and show-offs:

Do you want to help AAL, promote your business or club, or just want to show off Grandma's china that collects dust from one Thanksgiving to the next? Then sponsor a table at AAL's table topper' competition. The Rose Garden Club has committed to doing a table. I challenge the Rainbow Garden Club to do the same. Call Barbara Lowdermilk at 887-2305 or 887-3111 for more information.

Attention crafters:

AAL will sponsor a fall-Christmas bazaar November 20, so get busy on those craft items. More on this in upcoming columns.

AAL salutes....

Mistie Holley, former Miss Southwest Arkansas, for winning various singing awards at the Ashdown Country Music Jamboree.

Contact me at 887-6241 or 324 E. Main, Prescott, with questions, comments or art-related info.
