4 For Girls State

Published Wednesday, March 24, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

When Arkansas Girls State convenes at Harding University in Searcy May 30 through June 4 for its 57th session, four Gurdon High School juniors will represent Gurdon.

Gurdon's delegates for Girls State are Whitney Hogue, Heather Davies, Jessica Guthrie and Crystal Simpson.

The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Girls State. The girls are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character and honesty.

Contributors who are lending their financial assistance are CD&E Club, Mr. and Mrs. Austin Capps, First State Bank and the Gurdon Rotary Club.

Louise Davies, Girls State chairman and president of the Gurdon American Legion Auxiliary, stated that Girls State is an educational experience in state government. It informs them about the duties, privileges and responsibilities of state government and how it functions.

The Girls State delegates will live in mythical cities and elect their own officials and spend one day at the state capitol in Little Rock.
