Gurdon High School will sponsor a blood drive from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the high school student center.

T-shirts and refreshments will be given to all donors while supplies last. Those wishing to donate should bring their blood donor cards or picture identification. The event is open to the public and all eligible blood donors are encouraged to participate.

The American Red Cross has declared January as National Volunteer Blood Donor Month. Statistics from the Red Cross say that only 5 percent of the population make up blood donors. Yet one blood donation, the Red Cross goes on to state, could save three lives.

To be eligible, you must be at least 17-years-old, and answer yes to the following questions: I am feeling well today; I have not had a headache with fever in the past week; I am not taking antibiotics for an infection; I have not had a tattoo, transfusion or non-sterile piercing in the past 12 months; and I weigh at least 110 pounds.

It is suggested that before donating, donors should eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids.
