Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, March 31, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

Well, spring break is over and it seems as though we never left the building. How time seems to just fly by. Several students have shared their experiences of travel and shopping they enjoyed over the break.

Before we left for spring break, John Deering, editorial cartoonist of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, visited the eighth graders to explain how he draws the cartoons. The students had just completed an editorial cartoon notebook of which they had to collect the cartoons and explain the meaning of each.

The students asked Deering several questions concerning some of the cartoons they collected for the project. He explained the meaning of each and satisfied the curiosity of the students. It was a great opportunity for the students to hear about what goes into the drawing of a daily cartoon and how it stays with the current event.

Deering had several students to help in the drawing of several cartoons, showing them how just circles or lines can turn into cartoons. Students were very impressed. Signed cartoons were given to some of the students. If we had been able to stay in the assembly longer, Deering would probably have had each student be involved. He works so good with the students. Looking forward to next year!

April 2 school will be dismissed for one of the bad weather days. So we will have a short four-day week.

As we were not in school the week before, this article is a little short from the usual. Don't worry, as soon as the hallway is filled with the comings and going about of the students, you can be sure there will be Classy Moments at CMS.
