Sonic collects toys for local familyBY JOHN NELSONPublished Wednesday, December 15, 2004 in the Gurdon Times The staff of Sonic has agreed to provide for a needy family from Gurdon this Christmas with a toy drive on Friday, Dec. 17, and asks the public to join them in helping a three-year-old boy and his brother, who is just a few months old. Mary Smith, Sonic manager, said Thursday, "We are asking you to join us in this effort and bring a new toy for the three-year-old, as well as one for the boy under the age of one. "The employees of Sonic would like to thank you for participating in our toy drive. When you bring a toy, we will give you any 99 cent item on the menu." Smith said the picnic area at Sonic, corner of Third and Main Street, will be set up with free coffee and cookies. "We skipped the toy drive last year," she said. "But we had been doing it for at least five years before that. All 16 of the Sonic employees have agreed to donate." The toys from the public will be accepted from 7 a.m. until midnight on Dec. 17, as those are Sonic's regular hours. The employees have also agreed to donate the $30 they won from third place prize money for their truck entry at this year's Christmas parade, which will be used for toys. Smith said, "We will probably deliver the gifts within two to three days after collecting. The mother will do the wrapping. Sonic will also buy the Christmas dinner for the family."
