It was a perfect night for a victory, being Homecoming and all. And a sound victory is what the Go-Devils had over the Murfreesboro Rattlers.

After the pomp and circumstance of the royalty in all its glory, Gurdon fans got down to the business of cheering on the Devils and the Gurdon team got ready to play.

The 40-12 Devil victory leaves the team 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The Devils will be at home again this coming Friday night, with game time at 7:30 p.m. against Horatio.

As for the Friday night Homecoming, nothing happened on the scoreboard until 5:31 into the first quarter when Cameron Kennedy made the first Devil touchdown. The extra point was good and Gurdon shot out front, 7-0.

The ball went back and forth awhile but with 1:58 seconds left in the first quarter, Jamelle Lacy, captain of the Homecoming court, ran in another touchdown. That extra point was good as well and the lead widened to 14-0.

Then Gurdon scored again in the second quarter, with a touchdown by Jonathan Lacy with 7:56 to go before the half. Frank Smith blocked an important intended pass with about five minutes left in the half but the senior was not finished.

But with 4:10 to go, Murfreesboro got on the board, making it 20-6. Smith would not be outdone. After a 67-yard carry, he carried it into the end zone, making the score 26-6 Gurdon at the half.

The Homecoming parade, earlier that afternoon, turned out profitable for the freshman class. It was announced it had the winning class float, with Cabe Middle School coming in second.

On the community level, House of Joy got first with Great Beginnings Child Care Center coming in second. Colby Dickerson got first on bicycle, with Asher Griffin getting second. A disturbing announcement in the stands caused one fan, named Bob, to have to make a quick trip to downtown Gurdon. It seems his cow was loose on Main Street. Another fan shook her head and said, "Only in a small town."

With 7:06 left in the third quarter, the Go-Devils scored again, making it 32-6.

Kenneth Harper, who had suffered an injury as #52, recovered and took the #11 spot. The junior lineman made several good runs, but with 7:02 left in the game Harper scored a touchdown. This was just after a third down with 40 yards to go for the Devils. Harper's touchdown made it 38-6. The two point conversion was good, and the score was 40-6 Gurdon.

But the Rattlers got one last jab in with 3:36 left in the game, scoring a touchdown and making it 40-12. The clock ran out and Gurdon's win was secure.

Head Coach John Pace said to his players after the victory, "You can be very proud of what you did tonight."
