Asphalt project gets early start before rainsBY JOHN NELSONPublished Monday, October 13, 2003 in the Gurdon Times Jet Asphalt and Rock Company Inc., out of El Dorado, started paving on Wednesday and finished Bowen Hill Road. The company sold the City of Gurdon 8,000 tons of asphalt last week and said they could begin paving in two weeks. Mayor Clayton Franklin said Thursday, "We were glad to see them come and get an early start. In addition to Bowen Hill Road, they have already done filler on Crayton Street and Red Springs Road. "They are on Smithson Road (10th Street) as we speak." Street Superintendent Jim Caldwell said Smithson Road is approximately 1,100 feet to 1,200 feet long and would be finished in a few hours. "The plan is to move to Highway 53, East Main Street, and pave 0.8 of a mile Friday (Oct. 8), weather permitting," Caldwell said. According to the street superintendent, Jet had a few days break from another job and may have to go finish it before coming back to Gurdon to continue the paving. However, the early start will give the paving a better chance of an early finish. "We have Forest Festival and Christmas activities coming up," Caldwell said. "We are glad Jet came down and got started. So far, the progress has been real good." Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
