The Gurdon Go-Devils took a surprising loss to the Foreman Gators, 26-16, in their first conference bout of the season on Friday night.

The Go-Devils had a tough first half, not scoring until nearly the end of the second quarter. The Gators took the home field advantage right off as Foreman scored a touchdown early, making it 6-0 with 7:40 to go in the first quarter.

Then, with 3:35 left in the second quarter, Foreman scored another touchdown and a two-point conversion, making it 14-0.

But Go-Devil sophomore Lonnie Lacy, after gaining 17-yards on, made the first touchdown for Gurdon, pushing it to 14-6 with 43 seconds to go in the first half. A two-point conversion swinging gate play was attempted by Gurdon and Jamelle Lacy made it happen, hammering it to14-8 Foreman at halftime. But the Go-Devils were getting fired up.

Foreman came out with the emotion of a young team ready to protect the football after the half and continued to boost up the scoreboard. Continuing to play a nearly flawless game with no turnovers, with 4:08 left in the third, Foreman made another touchdown after a 40-yard pass, making it 20-8 Gators. The extra point was no good.

But Gurdon surprised the Gators, with about three minutes left in the third, when Lonnie Lacy hands the ball off to Jamelle Lacy, who nearly dropped it and it was picked up by Ben Gooding who ran it in for 45-yards and the Go-Devils's second touchdown.

This put the Go-Devils back in the game, but still trailing 20-14. The two-point conversion with Lonnie Lacy was good, shrinking the gap to four points, 20-16.

With 8:40 minutes in the game, Foreman went five yards and made another touchdown, making it 26-16. The extra point was no good at 8:08 left.

The clock ran out after that, with the final score remaining, 26-16 Foreman.

Defensively, Go-Devil Robert Plyler had nine tackles and Hunter Johnson had seven.

The defeat leaves the Go-Devils losing their first conference game of the season, going 0-1 in 7AA west and going 2-2 overall.

Gurdon continues with conference play at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1 when they will again be on the road this time against Dierks. The Go-Devils still have six conference games left. They will be at home against Spring Hill on Oct. 8.

The Junior Go-Devils will be home at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, against England.
