Gurdon High School Principal Leonard Gills said Wednesday morning marked nine or 10 years that he knows of students gathering around the United States flag pole in front of the school to pray for the school and other pertinent issues.

"I announced it yesterday," he said. "This year the high school had 15 or 20, while the middle school had 22 students and eight adults. The pole ceremonies were not as heavily attended this year, but it was still great to see students express concern."

Rick Pyron, pastor at Beech Street Baptist Church, came to offer support at the high school as well as the middle school.

Each child prayed as they liked. The ceremony was at 7 a.m. and lasted right at 30 minutes.

Laityn Medley, freshman, said, "We prayed for the school and for the soldiers in Iraq."
