New library board installedBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, September 1, 2004 in the Nevada County Picayune Details on when to meet, along with naming officers, were handled by the Prescott-Nevada County Library Board. The official Board met for the first time Thursday, Aug. 26, at the library. Howard Taylor was named chairman, with Prissy Traczewitz tabbed as secretary. Other Board members are Nevada County Judge James Roy Brown, Herbert Coleman, Myrna Waters, James Cornelius, David Cassels, Anne Franks and Gail Reddin. Brown suggested holding quarterly meetings, and calling special meetings if the need arises. The Board agreed, but will meet Oct. 21 to put a budget together to be presented to the Nevada County Quorum Court. A budget, made up of Cassels, Franks, Waters, Cornelius and Brown, will meet and work on this process. A question was asked concerning the use of the old library building. Brown said the problem is with the electric bill, which is eating into the library's budget. Librarian Joyce Gibson said the air condition is only used in the building when people are working in there, otherwise, it's simply used for storage. People are still giving the library books and are being told if they are more than a few years old they aren't needed. The library, she said, is getting ready to have another book sale to help get rid of some of the older books people have donated. Books not sold will be shipped to libraries in different countries. Gibson said the library needs consistent custodial work, with someone to do the work being hired. "The staff can't do it and the volunteers won't. We've been using different people, but no one on a consistent basis." Mopping and vacuuming need to be done on a regular basis, she said, adding it takes most of a day to vacuum the carpets in the building. The library furnishes the vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies, but needs someone to do the actual labor. A print exhibit will be held at the library in September and October, she said. The exhibit is the result of a grant written by Peggy Lloyd, curator of the Depot Museum. Students from the county's school districts will act as docents, telling the visitors about the print they're by. There will be a reception Sunday, Sept. 12, from 2-4 p.m. for the exhibit at the library. Refreshments will be served. The unveiling of the mural done by Shay Faris will be done at the reception as well. Taylor said someone from the local Board needs to be on the Regional Library Board, which also meets on a quarterly basis. Reddin was appointed to the position.
