City Scheduled Annual Cleanup For April 5-10

Once again it's time for spring cleaning in Gurdon.

April 5-10, the City of Gurdon will conduct a curbside pickup campaign for household junk. This, though, does not include bagged items or garbage.

The items to be collected must be at curbside so crews can get to them easily.

The city crews will accept appliances, furniture, old building materials and household items. Limbs, cut to a maximum of four feet, will also be accepted.

However, the crews will not pick up limbs from people's property, or limbs cut by commercial haulers.

The idea of this campaign, Gurdon Mayor Rick Smith said, is to help citizens get rid of items not normally picked up by the weekly garbage collection crews.

"It's kind of a prelim to Earth Day," Smith said. "We've had a lot of requests to do this and are trying to get things cleaned up for spring."

In the past, there has been a good turnout with people cleaning their homes and property to dispose of unwanted items.

"It's helped clean up Gurdon and some county roads," Smith said. "We're trying to help people avoid getting arrested for littering." The fine for littering is $1,000 for those caught and convicted.

Smith added the clean up campaign makes the city look nice as well, and it will be a project the city will continue to do.

Items to be picked up should be placed at curbside and then a call must be placed to City Hall at 353-2514 before 1 p.m. of the day the items are to be picked up.

No calls will be accepted after 1 p.m. Saturday, April 10.

Those living outside Gurdon are welcome to participate as well and can bring their items to the collection point on Joslyn Street during regular business hours.
