Beautificationo projects improve city's looksBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, August 25, 2004 in the Nevada County Picayune Beautification efforts were presented to the Prescott City Council by Mary Godwin, executive director of the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce. This was done at the council's regular monthly meeting, held Monday, August16. Godwin said the Beautification Committee started with one worker at the beginning of the summer. The worker stayed three weeks and left. Godwin hired her son, Riley, and Zach Avery to work the remainder of the summer. The two, she said, did a good job, weedeated where it was needed, picked up trash and mowed. They also worked at the Nevada County Fairgrounds mowing and weedeating as the fairgrounds are used regularly by different groups. The sidewalk project, she said, is nearly done, and when it's finished planters will be put back and new trash cans will be put out. Trees have been planted in most of the islands downtown where the sidewalks have been finished. The project has been slowed down as the crew lost its foreman. When work resumes, she said, the crews will have to redo some places, including an area by Sun-Shine Carpets where water pools when it rains. Godwin said the Nevada County Fair Board is having problems with its insurance for the upcoming fair. It seems the premium was increased $1,000 this year. However, she added, the Board hasn't said anything about approaching the council for help. At this point, the Board has raised the gate fee to $2 to offset the cost of insurance. Trash Day has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2, from 9-11 a.m. This is the third year Prescott has participated in the trash pick up program, she said. The Chamber has offered cash prizes the last two years and plans to again this year. Participants will be given T-shirts provided by the state. "We're going to try and hit the high school to get civic groups involved as they're always needing money," Godwin said. The city had visitors from California who came down to take a look at Prescott as a possible location for business expansion. Godwin said the city wasn't notified as the prospects simply wanted to look around. The prospects, she continued, appeared to be pleased, saying Prescott looked nice and were impressed with the projects underway. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
