Day Service Center expanding operationsBY FRANK ROTHPublished Wednesday, August 11, 2004 in the Nevada County Picayune The Nevada County Day Service Center looks forward to building additional classrooms in 2005, which will allow the center to accommodate more children. According to Day Service Center Executive Director Prissy Traczewitz, there's a real need for the additional space. "We have a waiting list of about 25 infants and toddlers right now," she said. The center has received an ABC Grant for operating funds, but there's no way to accept the grant until additional classroom space can be constructed. "The ABC Grant is state money to pay for preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds whose parents make less than 200 percent of the poverty level," Traczewitz said. "We can use a sliding scale to accommodate others who earn above that level." The program is designed to get the children ready to enter kindergarten at age 5. Traczewitz is currently seeking grants and donations to help defray the approximate construction cost of $375,000. "We hope to be able to begin construction in January," Traczewitz said. "This is another faith journey for us." The center serves 42 children and 26 adults currently, and the proposed expansion will include two 20-student classrooms. "This will allow us to almost double the number of 3- and 4-year-olds we have, and 28 of them should be covered by the ABC Grant," Traczewitz said. "Then the existing space will be used for infants and toddlers which will allow us to accept some of those on the waiting list. Knowing that some of the construction costs will have to be financed, Traczewitz plans to apply for a low interest loan to get construction started, but she hopes for generous community support. The Day Service Center offers early childhood education for preschool-aged children, and serves children and adults with disabilities. In addition to the classroom facility, the Day Service Center operates a group home and a community recycling center which employs adult clients.
