Cabe takes over as Rotary presidentBY WENDY LEDBETTERPublished Wednesday, July 7, 2004 in the Gurdon Times Gurdon's Rotary Club spent the first meeting under new president Anita Cabe discussing committees and projects for the coming year. Cabe said she also hopes to see the Rotary Club gain at least four members in the next year. Anyone who is interested in attending a Rotary meeting or learning more about Rotary should contact Cabe at 353-2063 or any Rotary member. The Rotary organization will celebrate its 100th anniversary in February 2005 and the Gurdon Club is planning to build a gazebo to commemorate the event. Discussion at last week's meeting included the possibility of purchasing a gazebo already built or a kit with club members doing the work. Cabe said she wants something that will last. Cabe appointed chairmen to standing committees, including Charles Cabe to the club committee, Alan Wimberly to the gazebo committee, Tambra Childres to the international service committee and Steven Orsbourne to the community service committee. Cabe said club members should also be on the look out for community service projects. These could include a fundraiser for a specific organization or event, or volunteering time. Cabe commended the club for their work in the past and advised them to exhibit pride in their club. She asked them to wear their Rotary pins on Thursdays the day the club meets. She said work and other events often cause conflicts with meetings, but said club members have the option of making up missed meetings by visiting other clubs. She said she would compile a list of area clubs and their meeting times for members interested in making up meetings. In keeping with her organizational meeting, Cabe read the Rotary information card to the group. She said she hoped to remind them of the importance of the organization. According to the card, "Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. "Rotary is the worlds' first service club. The first Rotary club was founded in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 23, 1905. "Rotary is some 1.2 million service minded men and women belonging to more than 28,000 Rotary clubs in virtually every nation in the world. "Rotarians meet weekly for fellowship and interesting and informative programs dealing with topics of local and global importance. Membership reflects a wide cross section of community representation. "Rotarians plan and carry out a remarkable variety of humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs that touch people's lives in their local communities and our world community. "Rotary is the Rotary Foundation, which each year provides some $90 million for international scholarships, cultural exchanges and humanitarian projects, large and small, that the quality of life for millions of people. Rotary is widely regarded as the world's largest private provider of international educational scholarships. "Rotary is service above self."
