Firework display at Go-Devil stadiumBY WENDY LEDBETTERPublished Wednesday, June 30, 2004 in the Gurdon Times For the third year, Gurdon will host a Fourth of July celebration that some say rivals the "big" events, including the show at DeGray Lake. Gurdon Band Director Alan Wimberly told Rotarians last week that the show will be held at Go-Devil Stadium, with bleachers for seating. For those who have attended the event in the past two years, there's no need to describe the show, but there are going to be some changes this year. One major change is that booths will be available. Denise Ezelle said anyone is welcome to set up a table and offer items for sale, such as arts, crafts, food and yard sale items. For example, anyone who has a craft for sale candles, needlepoint or others could set up a booth. Organizations such as church youth groups or others could have a booth for a bake sale. Wimberly told Rotarians that the first 200 people at the event will get a free hot dog. Wimberly said the band boosters' goal is to help make the event a success. They will offer hot dogs, cold drinks and popcorn "cheap," Wimberly said. He said they are not planning to make money on their sales, but only to break even. The Rotarians are among the local organizations that have helped pay for the event. Other sponsors include the city of Gurdon, the Cabe Foundation, CD&E Club, Gurdon Chamber of Commerce, Paul Barringer, 21st Century Community Learning Center and Calvary United Pentecostal Church. The fireworks display is done by a professional company and costs $3,500. Donations are accepted. The religious and patriotic singing will begin at 6 p.m. and will wrap up with audience participation. Singers for the event include Calvary United Pentecostal Church Ensemble and Youth Choir, Biran and Winnie Clark, Brad and Rush Loy, Brian Sanford, Pat Talley, Leandra Dillard and the Messengers From the Heart. The fireworks display will begin at 9:15 p.m. Booths will be open at 5 p.m. For more information, contact Ezelle at 353-2832, or Gurdon Mayor Clayton Franklin.
